Dear John is a 2010 American romantic drama-war film starring Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum. It was made by Screen Gems and was released theatrically in North America on February 5, 2010. The film was directed by Lasse Hallström, and it is an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' 2006 novel of the same name. It follows the life of a soldier (Channing Tatum) after he falls in love with a young woman (Amanda Seyfried). They decide to exchange letters to each other after he is deployed to the war. The movie was filmed in 2009 in Charleston, South Carolina.
When soldier John Tyree (Channing Tatum) meets an idealistic college student, Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried), it's the beginning of a strong romance. Over the next seven tumultuous years and separated by John's increasingly dangerous deployment, the lovers stay in touch through their letters, meeting in person only rarely. However, their correspondence triggers consequences that neither could foresee.
Unlike a regular romantic movie, I would say it is more aligned towards reality in terms of romantic relationships. I am a huge fan of this movie especially the ending part. But I wouldn’t say it is the perfect adaptation of the original novel. The director did try to make it to perfection within the limitation of visual presentation. The casting and the acting is dominating throughout the entire show. The story is also heart touching and the shots of exchanging love letters brings in the feel of nostalgia. In the genre of romance, this is a good choice and you will be happy that you chose this one
